Woman: Can I help you?
Janis: Yes, I need a good foundation makeup!
Janis: Something, uh...
Janis: Something, uh...
Janis: Subtle.
Woman: I know just what you mean!
Too funny!!! Reminded me of a boss I had once who used a dark shade of red lipstick, and I swear she smeared it all over just like a crayon.. I had to keep from staring at her lips.
I am in my mid-70s, and have been blessed with a good complexion. (Don’t smoke and say out of the sun.) The only thing I ever wear is a bit of foundation over my nose and under my eyes.
Fellow commenters, we are talking about a “swike.” That’s what my mom used to call anyone (usually a woman) who thought she was making herself look better, but was doing the opposite. This was especially true of the older woman who badly needed cataract surgery and piled on the makeup or hair color so that she could see it.
Did anyone notice the sales person in the last panel is not the same one as the other two? Either that or she’s a really quick change artist. Oh wait, maybe the first two are how Janis perceived her and the last is how she really looks.
Saw a woman once who clearly put on her makeup using lights that flattered her but gave her no idea how she looked under fluorescent ones out in public. Where, so help me, she startled me by looking exactly like the undertaker had finished with her face: she looked like a corpse. Yow.

What the sales clerk should have said was ’I’m familiar with the concept’.

Can I help you? I expect that was a deliberate choice by J.J.

If it is obvious, it is too much. On stage in a large theater being an exception.

When I was in high school in the long-ago Sixties, some of the girls went WAY overboard in their experiments with eyeliner. Major raccoon eyes.

Must be the MAC counter. She’s even wearing the little black dress. The girls (and guys) there generally overdo their make up.

I agree with most of the comments above. “Beauty parlor” is a big oxymoron. JJ, this was one of your best A&Js.
