Cats have a weird way of [not] looking that to us is spacing out. Actually they are probably in a mode that allows them to detect the slightest movement and sound and home in on it fast. Nothing like a cat on sudden alert because there’s a lake fly fluttering at the end of the hall…. then nothing but fur and paws flying by as the cat rockets up the wall after the prey.
It’s the hunting/stalking instinct. Pay close attention to a location where there was once prey (e.g. a wall where there was a bug, or a closet door where there was a mouse) and stare at it in order to pounce on the next critter that appears there.
It makes perfect sense in the wild, where a hole in the ground that was host to a mouse or rabbit will likely have a few more in the future.
Inside a home, it’s not going to be very productive, but instincts are far older than humans keeping indoor pets.
Good movie.I turned to my wife and said, “Probably the first time anybody’s ever been psychoanalyzed by a ghost.”She said, “What?” so I dropped it until the end of the movie so she could be surprised appropriately.
I had a miniature pinscher that would sit on my lap and every now and then his head would ,move slowly to the right as if something was walking past him towards the stairs.

I’ve heard that dogs, too, can see things that we can’t.

My cat Tiger did that exact same thing this morning: looking out the kitchen window and meowing at nothing in particular.
