That’s the difference between living nearby and coming to visit. When you come to visit, time is dedicated to everyone getting together because you are in town. When you live nearby, you hardly see each other at all except for special occasions and when out-of-town family members come to visit.
My wife and I are the out-of-town family members to both of our families. When we are in town for a visit, the whole family gets together for several days. Many try to coordinate long weekends around our visits. When we aren’t there, they hardly see each other.
Think many posters completely missed the point of the strip: Janis says the kids want A & J to feel at home, then immediately she is on her device. Arlo’s eyes in P3 tell it all. Yep, just like “home”. “It’s working.”

My sons give me grief for the same thing all the time. I tell them I earned the right to do nothing if I want and I plan on using it.

The question is, where do you want to take that space… Within reach of the kids or further away…

Janis is reading a book in the first two panels but then has her phone in the next two…continuity error?

I’m not going to feel at home, unless I’m in MY home. Otherwise it just feels like a vacation.

If they feel too much at home, they may decide not to move. What’s the incentive if it’s all the same?

Time to get Luddie’s thoughts on the subject.
