Dad: So... you making straight A's this semester? Baldo: Dad, why are you always putting pressure on me to be perfect? Dad: Baldo, I've never said I want you to be perfect. Baldo: Well, maybe not... Baldo: But I see it in your body language.
No! No! No! Bad parent! From about third grade on, my father constantly pounded into my head that anything short of perfection was failure. If I got a 98 on a test, the first words out of his mouth would be, “Why didn’t you get 100?” An A would bring “Why not A+?”. And then there was Mom. Always telling me it was my job to be a role model to my younger brother and sister. Great stuff to tell an eight-year-old. No pressure. If I did anything “childish”, mom would go ballistic on me. Just what a third grader needs. Relentless pressure and constant criticism. Made my childhood a nightmare. Thanks for letting me vent.
