A batter position?

I think he is trying to make a silly point. But where is the joke?

They’re not getting the point.

I got stumped at, “Square the batsman’s wicket”. The wicket’s a post, right? What is " square" of that??

Thanks to an earlier comment I looked it up. “Silly Point” – “A fielding position, on the off side, square of the batsman’s wicket, and very near the batsman; a fielder in this position.”

You left out that he has to be close to the batsman, Horace. But I guess that’s a silly point to make too.

You know, now that I “get it” (a dangerously posterior position to assume – keeping in the current spirit of joke telling), it ain’t funny, Horace.

Weingartens, leave the knowingly bad jokes to Pastis.

Kinda like the “Who’s on first” thing…
