The thing is, some birds are predators, others are prey, birds like hawks & eagles are predatory and have the eyes in the front, non-predatory birds have wide-spaced eyes so they can keep a lookout for the predators; it is the same with four-legged animals, for instance, the wolf has the eyes at the front of it’s head, but it’s prey (like the rabbit), have eyes on the sides.
From Wiktionary:Insect = An arthropod in the class Insecta, characterized by six legs, up to four wings, and a chitinous exoskeleton. Arthropod = An invertebrate animal of the phylum Arthropoda, characterized by a chitinous exoskeleton and multiple jointed appendages.

There are no pigeons left. The last pigeon on earth was the passenger pigeon. What we call pigeons today are actually doves.

Insects are animals. At least they were when I went to school, which was not in the middle ages. The animal kingdom is divided into several classes.
