Algebra was invented with a purpose in mind: dividing inheritances. A huge amount theory and application followed from that. Not to mention, the critical thinking skills we gain from understanding Algebra (and use without employing a single number or variable) can benefit us throughout our lives. The world’s many advances owe a great deal to Muḥammad ibn Mūsā al-Khwārizmī and the Islamic Golden Age.
As a housewife I used algebra often. While shopping fittingthings into place a wee bit of geometry. My waitress jobsneeded math and delivering mail. I graduated in 1949
“The demise the the intellectual Muslim society is proof that religion should never be a part of government.”.While I tend to agree, I fail to see how this is proof.Muslim society started as part of government and the intellectual portion grew over a hundred years later, lasted quite a while, hasn’t completely died out even though many have rejected it all along..Further, there actually are some aspects of religious teachings you would probably prefer to be part of any government.Don’t lie about others to harm them.Don’t try to steal from everybody else.Don’t kill every who perterbs you.Treat others as you wish you would be treated.Esteem others, don’t treat them as property to be used and abused.Seek peace.Help others when possible.Don’t rape.Don’t torture.Try to act justly..You may not agree with all of these and you may wish to add a few, but none of these attitudes are born in people. They are not taught by all religions and are not part of athiesm inherently. (Many agnostics and athiests accept these concepts, but only because of cultural conditioning.).You don’t want the Pope or the imam telling you who to kill, but you don’t want to live in a world in which killing is no big deal — stealing, raping, looting, lying all acceptable part of life.
A triceratops leaves Philadelphia running west at 15 mph at 7:00 AM. An hour later, a T-rex leaves Chicago running east at 20 mph. If the distance between Philadelphia and Chicago is 760 miles, at what time do they meet?
A customer last night wanted to know if a 9 pack of pints is the same as a regular 12 pack. 12 12oz cans is 12². 9 is 3². 16oz in a pint is 4². Does 3²•4²=12²? Don’t even have to figure out how many total ounces that comes to, gross.

People use algebra every day. Most don’t have the foggiest idea they’re doing it though.
How many shirts can I buy for $50?
Shirts selling for $10 each

I love algebra so much that I repeated it a second time, had a tutor and took it in summer school. I still failed.

And it was the religious fanatics that perpetrated one of the greatest crimes against knowledge: the burning of the Library of Alexandria.
