If I ever move back north, I am going to make myself an ice rink in my backyard. Then again, unless I move to Lapland, will it ever be cold enough to stay frozen?

Sadly, even that is not a sure bet .

tried making rinks in the back yard. It’s not easy. And don’t let the hose freeze.

My neighbors have a nice backyard to use as a rink. First, they put down the liner and put bumpers along the edges. Then they fill it and wait for it to freeze. They also erect tall poles and have those white lights strung between and across from them to light it all up and a spotlight on the house. Their backyard parties are quite different from ours but very lively, frequent, and usually over by the time that kids have to be in bed. Our boys used to shovel and sweep the snow off of the flooded area of our yard and skate which was lots of work and didn’t last all season.

I put up a rink each year while my daughter was in HS. Liner and PVC pipe for edges. I was disappointed with how seldom the ice froze solid. It always seemed a little soft at the edges.

I’d like to know just what use a rink is to Ben. I’ve never seen him skate and at his age, he shouldn’t be out on the ice, anyway!
