It is a sad commentary grandparents that feel as though that the number of grandchildren is a competition. Sadder for those who do not have grandchildren.
My family can be traced back to 1590 (Germans keep good records!). I have two sons and two grandsons, so I feel the pressure is off me to keep our surname going.
Are all the Olivia Hatleys old enough to be grandmothers, or just those who have written her ? First names rise and fall in popularity. (I think Olivia is currently back in fashion.)
Sadder still is having grandchildren that live far away and other grandchildren who were abducted by their mother during a divorce and you don’t even know where they are.
My comment that it is sadder not to have grandchildren, is in reference to those who do and do not let you forget the fact as if they are trophies. Even sadder when someone can’t have children or their children can’t have children, ie grandchildren.I know of such a person who always had to be the center of attention and in the same social circle a woman who had several miscarriages.
Children are our future. They are a sign of hope and what might be. There are many valid reasons to chose not to have children. To choose not to procreate because you have no hope for the future is the saddest of all and says much more about you than any situation you may find yourself in. Unless you are in a place like Ukrane or Venezuela, things are rarely as bad as you may perceive them to be.

It’s pretty easy to win a competition if you set the victory requirements.

14 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Counting all the grand nieces/nephews would put the number close to 60.

I don’t know. You don’t know what life is like for either of those other Olivia Hatleys. Either of them might be much happier or much worse off.
