    Like my kids when they were very young. They would play with the new present for a while, then play in the big cardboard box it came in for the rest of the day. Great imaginations.

    So what if it’s just cardboard? Visually, he’s in an easily-defended position. That’s why I prefer a booth in a restaurant. Too bad it fails to get a smile out of a maî·tre d.

    Actually, the last appliance that arrived in a box was the dryer my parents got in the late 1960s. I think they just arrive “as is” these days — the last two washers and the refrigerator I’ve bought have all arrived “boxless.”
