Big Nate by Lincoln Peirce for July 01, 2011
Transcript:
Mrs. Godfrey, I needed a hundred on the final to get a B for the semester. Uh huh... Well, since I came so close - y'know, getting a 99 and everything - do you think maybe you could give me a B anyway? Why would I do that? Because you're so stinkin' nice! Have a good summer.
krisbradpc over 13 years ago
First comment! This is very unfair to Nate. He should at least get a B-. If he gets anything lower than a B-, I’m going to hate Mrs. Godfrey. NATE DESERVES A B!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NightHawk2005 over 13 years ago
Well, why should Nate get a B he didn’t earn? You can tell from her response that Mrs. Godfrey is thinking, “You showed no effort or interest for the entire school year, only decided to try on your last chance and now you want me to do you a favor? Why should I?” Nate dug his own grave. I wouldn’t be sympathetic to him either.

She deserves any pranks she gets from her students :)

know a teacher like that. a petty unimaginative demoralized teacher. a teacher who at first was full of energy and imagination, but as times passes becomes a bitter, petty only teaching for the paycheck. and people wonder why some kids don’t like school when there some teachers who punch out at 3.
tqnism over 13 years ago
She might still give him B. Just as encouragement.
Potrzebie over 13 years ago
I wonder what the first strips with them together were like. From what I have seen, she is an educator first. Nate lashes out because he expects a free ride from her. Did they start out like that?
Mopman over 13 years ago
My new prediction is that his report card will come in the mail and he will have his B. If not, then I predict he will not get his B, lol.
StoicLion1973 over 13 years ago
While I applaud Nate’s effort, I have to co-sign w/ NightHawk2005 and Mrs. Godfrey. Nate showed no effort the entire year until that final. Yes, it stinks for the kid but life isn’t fair.

Life is unfair. Why? Because those in power make it that way. That which you plant, you also will harvest – if you cultivate rightly.

I had a teacher like this. Reminds me of that scene in the Breakfast Club with Carl and Vernon in the file room:
“You took a teaching position, ‘cause you thought it’d be fun, right? Thought you could have summer vacations off…and then you found out it was actually work…and that really bummed you out.”
- Carl, The Breakfast Club

I agree with NightHawk2005 and StoicLion. Many teachers and professors I’ve had in the past are like this. Doesn’t matter if you’re 0.1% away from the next letter grade… you get what you’ve earned. C+ is still passing….

again wrong message. Teacher has a grudge, to rob a student of a B because the name wasn’t not in the right spot, hello teacher, principal and parent meeting. Get A Clue.

is it too much to hope she gets hit by a school bus in a crosswalk?

i agree with joe w. — nate’s dad needs to call out godfrey on this one.

Whoa! Get a grip people. This is a comic strip. You’re supposed to dislike Mrs. Godfrey. Oh, and Nate is also ink on paper, not a real person…
Jhonbaker over 13 years ago
Give him the B – he earned the 100. Even bad teachers know when to give a little to get back more.
bugaboo27 over 13 years ago
I think she agreed. I think his face in the last panel indicates that she agreed, and he’s happy, but confused because he usually can’t stand her but now she’s gone and done something nice! He’s smiling!

I’m afraid the 99 percent still stands Nate.

i’m with bugaboo27 on this one. See his blushing? I think she gave him a ’lil kiss, too!

I agree wih Nighthawk2005. If Nate had applied himself all year like he did in the end he would have walked away with an A and not had to worry about the last test. That said, I don’t like Mrs. Godfrey, never have. I’ve had teachers in my life who had my brother and/or sister before me. They assumed I was the same and never gave me a chance.
artist2 over 13 years ago
Nate, why did you even suspect she would give you a B? After all the things he’s done and how strict she is?He didn’t have a prayer. But then maybe if he gave her a really in-depth answer as to why he deserves a B then she would give him extra credit.Hahahahahaha I used to have a teacher like that.
Popeyesforearm over 13 years ago
Nate has that gun-in-a-bell-tower look on his face. Who knows what he’s capable of. He is The Master of cutting people down and practicle jokes. I would be sleeping with one eye open if I was her.
Creature950 over 13 years ago
Mrs. Godfrey hates Nate. So when Nate finally applied himself, she didn’t give him the A+ he deserved. She was probably desperate for a way to deduct a point. In this strip, she had a “What’s in it for me?” kind of expression. This is why teachers shouldn’t hold grudges.
NightHawk2005 over 13 years ago
Well, to be fair, Mrs. Godfrey hates Nate because Nate hates her. I’ve actually been in the same situation where I finished a point away from an A. The difference was, since I actually spent my time in class paying attention as opposed to making fun of my teacher, my teacher was sympathetic and bumped me up a point. I didn’t deserve it any more than Nate does, but I got it because I put in the work. Since it’s a comic strip, Nate doesn’t need to learn any lesson here, but if it were real life, I would hope that either Nate learned on his own that you create your own breaks through hard work, or Francis reminded him of it.

And students like Nate are the reason some of those young, passionate, caring teachers are ready to punch out by 3 each day after years of them. Nate has been “so stinkin nice” all year in class with his attitude that, gee, well, yeh, payback is…
BeniHanna6 Premium Member over 13 years ago
Point is Nate always got the bad grades he deserved throughout the year, he should get the good grade he deserves for the time he applied himselve to deny it is not right and our school the teacher would be straightened out. You get what you deserve nothing more and definitely NOTHING LESS.
SackofRabidWeasels over 13 years ago
It wasn’t about Nate going to summer school, it was about Nate finally having a reason to succeed in Ms. Godfrey’s class, even if it was petty. Did we learn that if Nate did apply himself, he can succeed in Ms. Godfrey’s class? Yes, but that is overshadowed once again by Nate coming out a loser because of Ms. Godfrey, which means her pet gets to put on the smug face one more time.It also shows that to Nate, it’s not worth it to try in Ms. Godfrey’s class because she hates him and will screw him no matter what, even if the reasons he put forth some effort in her class were petty. The status quo is upheld, the strip’s time-space is safe, and Nate somehow will still repeat the 6th grade and continue to be the loser that he is.

Why give Nate a B when he showed no effort the entire year until the final? Because he showed effort on the final, and as a teacher Mrs. Godfrey really should reward and encourage that, instead of dinging him one, all important point on a technicality.

Usually, Nate’s accusation of Mrs. Godfrey being pure evil is pure nonsense. But THIS is pure evil.
