Yes Nate, there is a certain satisfaction that comes from seeing someone who desperately needs it get smacked down.

Can’t trust any teacher who can’t talk properly. No, English isn’t her class, but if she can’t pronounce her word’s properly, then what else is doing wrong? I had a hard time in school, had a hard time dealing with incompetent teachers.

You know what they say Francis,‘if you have nothing nice to say, just keep quiet.’and some people wonder why I’m so quiet around them.

Personally, I do not like people – in general – who correct my grammar. It simply means that one is not paying attention to WHAT I am saying, but HOW I am saying it.

They are indeed often right, the thing is, they add a nice layer of shame to their admonishments. It’s just someone talking, that’s all. Myself, I tend to smile at syntax errors.

Listen to Starfire on the Teen Titans, and you’ll see what I mean. Thing is – if Francis met a pretty girl and he started correcting her on her grammar, he’d be striking out, big time.

As for Mrs. Godfrey, I don’t think she’s a very good teacher. She makes a very good tyrant – she seems to care more about discipline rather than teaching. I’ve seen strips where Nate and his classmates do something RIGHT, and they are left unrewarded. Do the tiniest thing WRONG, and they are swiftly punished with detention.

Like Nate, Francis, Gina and all the other youth of today, Mrs. Godfrey needs to learn some soft skills….….and maybe be a tad kinder.

    But hey, that’s just me.

It’s an “uh” sound either way, so unless cartoon characters can see the word bubbles, it would not be possible for him to tell whether she was spelling it with an e or an o…

It is rude to correct a teacher’s grammar, but they really should know how to say the word.

Actually “ain’t” is very widely used. It isn’t a corruption, simply an obsolete contraction of aren’t. From Mirriam Webster

Origin of AIN’Tcontraction of are notFirst Known Use: 1749

It later changed to aren’t. So it is not wrong, simply outdated.

If paid professionals (teachers, broadcasters, journalists, etc) make mistakes so blatant that a non-professional notices them, they deserve to be corrected, and the colleges that they graduated from should be sued for malpractice. If a non-professional makes mistakes, at least they are not setting examples for everyone in the media. They have the right to remain ignorant. If a professional car mechanic screws up your repairs, you’re upset. If it’s the shade tree mechanic next door, what did you expect? Failure to communicate can cause problems.

I remember correcting teachers a couple times in junior high. One – my science teacher – was pretty cool about it, said he’d bet me a Coke if I was right – and he bought the soda. My social studies teacher wasn’t as impressed. Lesson learned – nobody likes being corrected in public!

Francis reminds me of Sheldon Cooper, a character created for comic relief, if there ever was one. I like the show, and I know Frances was created first, just couldn’t help notice the similarities.
