Sorry, Nate, I didn't mean to act so shocked.
I just... I thought you were in seventh grade, so...
That's okay, Trudy. I get it.
You don't want to hang out with a sixth grader.
Well, I... I'm not sure.
I am.
Well, sucky as it may be – he is in the (w)right. They certainly like each other, but won’t work if she will worry about something like that. So, hopefully she will find a way to come around to it.
This better not be another fail like Amy. I only re-added this strip to my faves because I thought Trudy would work. The strip is lame without a leading lady (and Jenny doesn’t count).
Seriously, but why is it like this? Like, a girl can be younger than a guy by 5 years, it’s perfectly okay but a GUY is younger, even a year, than a girl, it’s unacceptable and embarrassing.
Tbh my guess for the strip tomorrow will be her running after him and they have a “nate, wait – let me explain” “explain what it seems perfectly clear” “its not that simple to me, I need time to think” “ok, when you are done thinking you know where I am – in sixth grade” or variation thereof. Unless this is going to run into next week ofc. :DAt the very least I´d be surprised if she doesn´t try to run after him, and Nate is going to be hitting walls that night for this event.
And then ofc it catches up at a later date where she has made up her mind and does something (affectionate) to him at school. To at least attempt to be with him. :)
Tomorrow’s going to be (a) Trudy running after Nate apologizing, with Nate having the goofy grin and thinking “score!” or (b) Nate bemoaning the fickleness of women over a couple of bags of Cheezy Doodles while Francis and Teddy commiserate, until Nate says something fickle himself.Personally, I’m hoping for something closer to (a).
I think Nate’s doing the right thing (no pun intended), most girls will go for the guy that’s harder to get over the one that’s right there practically begging to be with us. Sad but true.
Hey, I am a successful toddler trapper (not over two years younger than myself and 38 years married). I knew a couple of cradle robbers in college, too.
noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I now hate you Trudy
Jeeze-Louise!! If he means: " I am……sure that I’m some kind of dweeb", then he’s just acting his typical Nate self.Don’t shoot her down (given your track record for, uhmmmm, ALL time back to 1991, you CAN’T AFFORD to shoot down any nice AND nice-looking girl right off the bat) before the two of you talk this out!
The right choice for Trudy in this scenario would be to go against the normal middle school social order and agree to go out with Nate. Nate’s been pushed around by the system all his life (because he’s stuck in a hellish, infinite loop of sixth grade). It’s time somebody took a stand.
Because if this turns out the other way, I might just have to go chug some bleach.
Nate, you don’t deserve a girl who is really ageist. This is really sad for all of us Big Nate fans, but we know that Nate can’t always be happy… we just want him to be happy. Keep on going Nate, we support you… well, I do XD
I am almost crying!!!!!!!!!!! But by the looks on their faces on panel four, and Trudy trying to apologize, they HAVE to make up! PLEASE PLEASE PLEEEEEEEEEEEEASE mr. peirce HAVE NATE AND TRUDY MAKE UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Okay, now I feel better. I just have to wipe the tears off the computer.
Oh, how heartbreaking. Why is this story arc so touching? When I met my first love, Nate’s story is eerily similar to mine.It was a “meet cute” in the student lounge at the technical college I attended when I was 20. Something “clicked” with a chemistry tech when an advertisement for the remastered “Blade Runner” appeared on tv in the student lounge.
We discovered that we went to see the movie at the same theatre – she hit the 7pm show, I hit the 9:30pm show. We very well could have brushed shoulders as she exited the theatre while I entered.
KISMET! SERENDIPITY! (sorta)
She was a complete stranger, but here we were, talking about replicants, retirements, Vangelis soundtracks and Harrison Ford. Then we both had to part ways, as we had separate classes in separate buildings.
But something clicked.
I had to do a little detective work – just like Nate did – to find her – and I did. I asked her out to go to a rock concert.
We shared our first kiss under the mirrorball when I took her to see one of the great Canadian rock bands, 54-40. Right when they sung “I Go Blind” – it was magic, I tell you, Time stopped. It really did.(the song was made very famous later when Hootie and the Blowfish covered the song and made it a hit song in the USA.)
But she got cold feet, and ended the relationship quickly, as she confessed she had her eyes on one of her classmates as a romantic interest.
But she came back – very quickly – after she discovered that her love interest classmate didn’t share a mutual attraction.
Things blossomed. Then soured. We had two years together.
She then left me for another one of her classmates. She married, moved away, had kids and I haven’t heard from her in 20 years.
I’ve been reading the comments, and the creator/author is proclaiming that this love story isn’t over yet.
I will be continuing to read this story arc with great interest.Nate has a lot to learn. And so does Trudy.
Here’s hoping that they will learn a lot more from each other….

Guys, it will end up ok. Nate and Kelly had some arguments, but it turned out alright with them :)

OK. Now I get it. The more there is friction in the start, the more there is heat in the end.

It’s funny how when we’re adults we don’t care about age as much, but in middle school and high school it seems to make such a difference.

C’mon, Nate, don’t have such a low opinion of yourself. She wants a challenge to “train” a younger guy.
