Recently, during a walk in the country at night, my dog spotted a possum and took out after it. He caught up with it and bowled it over and it just laid there. He stood sniffing it in confusion and had the same expression: What do I do now? We finally walked away and – sure enough – it was only playing possum!
Reminds me of the Peggy Lee song: (I caught a squirrel and I thought,)I don’t know what, but when it was over I said to myselfIs that all there is to (catching a squirrel)? Is that all there is, is that all there is?If that’s all there is my friends, then let’s keep dancingLet’s break out the booze and have a ballIf that’s all there is
When I was 12 or 13, I shot a squirrel. I was so proud of that great shot! Then I went out and picked up its dead, lifeless corpse, and all the pride went away. I have despised hunting ever since then.
One of our Border Collies, a joyous, harmless soul, once caught a squirrel he was chasing. He brought the little critter to us and gently laid it down and looked up at us as if to say, “I don’t know what happened! Can you fix??”. There wasn’t a mark on the squirrel; we think he died of fright. That dog neither caught not chased again.
