A coworker was asked when he was hired the question, âWhere do you see yourself in 5 years.â It was in front of a panel, so he picked one out and said, âI plan to have your job.â
This happened to me a while back. A recruiter badgered me into going to an interview for what he called an âeager customerâ⊠recruiter wouldnât tell me what company the interview was with until the day of the interview, other than to claim âthey do the same kind of work that your employer does, and youâre well qualifiedâ⊠against my intuition I decided to go, since I wasnât happy where I wasâŠ
Turned out to be a direct competitor in the town next door. I easily met all of the job requirements that the interviewer recited⊠As we talked it sounded like it might be a promising opportunity⊠then after an hour the interviewer told me that he couldnât hire me because I out-qualified him and he was afraid his management might put me over him⊠I was a bit miffed at spending so much time only to hear this that I asked him if his manager would appreciate him turning away what heâd told me was needed talent⊠he said his manager would probably agree because I also out-qualified himâŠ
It was just as well I didnât end up there. From talking to one of our former techs who did go there, as well as several others who left that company to come to ours, that company was a clown show. A couple years later it got sold to a national competitor, who ended up closing that shop and laying everybody off.
