In pistol duels, there was a tradition (sometimes employed) of “throwing away one’s shot”. Which is to say firing away from their opponent, in hopes that the simple act of showing up on the field and taking the risk would be enough to satisfy the offended party.
Among other rules sometimes employed:
The offended party determined what conclusion was acceptable and there were three possible outcomes: 1) first blood (the duel ended when one combatant was wounded); 2) the duel continued until one combatant was physically unable to proceed; or 3) death, a combatant was fatally wounded.
In this case, the mustachioed opponent might not have been satisfied in the end that Bozo was “a gentleman”.
I this strip is edgy in a weird way…how many people under 60 are going to have any idea what they’re doing in the 2nd strip, for instance. Great time capsule (not that I was around in 1946)

1. Ah, the good Samaritans of Dinkytown. The umbrella guy’s destination appears to be something else.
2. Dunno who shot the duck, but Bozo claims it for himself.
3. I Sue em. Ha ha ha. Who needs a doctor when ya gots a lawyer, eh, Bozo.

Had to look hard for Umbrella Man in #1….finally found him. This has become habit forming.
