I have to confess here anecdotally: In real life, we have one large box in the bathroom and two small ones under the stairs. We scoop twice a day, and that has worked for us.
I know the “one for every cat, plus one” is the preferred formula often from vets and shelters, and that’s why I shared it. I know many people it works well for! I do think it really depends on the cats themselves sometimes too.
In Lupin’s case, he took 4-5 litter boxes to mean EVERYTHING WAS A LITTER BOX. It’s taken us a long time to retrain him, and it’s still a struggle sometimes. (…Keep that in mind for tomorrow’s strip, lol!) Go with what works for your home! And in real life, Tommy and Sophie actually do have beautiful cabinet boxes like the one in this week’s strip! I tried it and Elvis and Puck both seemed to really like it. Lupin sprayed down the walls like the box was on fire and he was responding to a call, lollll. It did not work for Lupin (and this was before Goldie). It would have been a great option for Elvis and Puck! It truly is all about options and what works for the cats in our homes.
I also must credit my editor Shena Wolf with the joke in this last strip. She said it once, during a talk around litter boxes, and I laughed so hard. The Man and I still say it to each other often, when scooping. I feel like many cat owners have had that feeling once or twice. It felt extra funny to give the line to Puck as an optimistic “ah, the future is bright” kind of moment, lol!
