sad news to report today. Liza my kitty of 15 years died today. She was a rescue cat from the shelter. She spent her first 2 years of her life there from kitten to I adopted her.Just a thought when people go out to get a kitten maybe instead get an older cat. They are the most over looked and need homes the most. Liza may not have been a kitten when I got her but she was always very loving and greateful to have a home.
Indeed, I was actually told I should have one box per cat plus one on every floor, making a total of 15. In actuality I had two litter boxes in the basement, and the cats did Just Fine. I suppose it’s different if you have a “difficult” cat or if they don’t get along.
On occasion, I have heard our cats say something like, “The world is our Bathroom” .
Our first cat was different. When Salem was a kitten,we were not sure we could have a cat with our Dog, Simba, but our daughter really wanted him.
So we got the kitten, and gave him to Simba to care for as “his” pet. This worked very well, as Simba took good care of Salem, and taught him his own Bathroom habits.
Simba would use the composter for solids, and the shrubs around the back wall for liquids. Salem followed that when he was outside, and used his litter box if we didn’t let him out when he wanted or needed to go.
The composter always had fresh solids from them, and the Possums never ventured beyond the back wall, as the odor “guard” kept them wary. Sadly both Simba and Salem have passed, and the new dogs and cats don’t perform nearly as well at this service. The cats like to use the trees on the perimeter of our property sort of their messaging system. Our recent dogs are all rescues and don’t yet have the discipline that Simba had.
Nope. 1 box. 2-3 cats. Never had a problem. I literally haven’t the space or the energy for more than one box, nor the money for all that litter. 1 box, that’s all they get. I scoop 3xdaily.
You can get by with fewer boxes, it just means committing to more frequent/daily scooping. In the office, our ratio nets out to less than one per cat. However, we scoop the boxes at least twice a day. No matter how many boxes you use, the rule is, “keep ‘em clean and keep ‘em convenient.” Except the rare time someone has been ill, we never have incidents, but we are diligent about maintenance morning and evening, and sometimes when it’s obvious it needs a scoop.
Another thing, watch your elder cats if the box is in the basement. Move it to a quiet area on their main floor if you notice them hesitating, or going down the stairs slower. Too many folks think their older cat has “lost their training” when it fact it is just hard for them to navigate the stairs or get there in time.
Another accident mitigation is have a night light in the area. We confuse cat’s excellent “night vision” with “blind vision.” In nature, there is still a lot of ambient light, even from just the stars for cats to see by. Windowless basements and closets can be pitch black. A cat will manage because they have to, but it is more stressful than it needs to be. Help them out. Also, older cats can lose their night vision and it can make them uneasy to go into a dark area.
Finally an unsolicited plug: if anyone needs a rec, the Tidy Cat Slide scoop-able is a game changer for multi cat houses. It costs more, but is 99.99% dust free, the scooping ability lasts much longer, and it doesn’t cement to the box, so you aren’t changing it all out all the time. We actually use less now.
“This used to be wall to wall litterboxes until most of them got harvested. Now that litterboxes are protected and making a comeback, this will once again become a majestic field of boxed litter!”
@AlishaDawn, how is your dad after his g.b. surgery? Hope he’s doing well.
I’ve slept a LOT in the last 24 hours, and in the recliner. When I try to lie on the bed, I feel like I can’t breathe, no doubt due to the mass quantity of CO2 gas they pump into your abdominal cavity crowding the lungs. They told me it would take a couple of days to be absorbed, that it cannot be expelled in the “other ways” that gases are disposed of by the body. Dang it! Otherwise, I have four “poke holes” that of course are sore, but still not enough for Percocet, acetaminophen alone did fine for last night. Throat is no longer sore, but I do have a bit of a cough that hopefully won’t last long. Otherwise, as long as I don’t move, I feel pretty normal, minus the nausea that has been ever-present for months. And again, thanks to the Orb for your concern and support—this is the real happiest place on earth!
We did that until we got Litter Robots. Now it’s one LR upstairs, one LR and one old fashioned/regular downstairs. The cats are happy and the Mrs is happy and that’s all that matters.
I have 2 litterboxes and 2 cats, but even when I had 3 cats, 2 boxes were fine (my Big 3 I had for 10+ years, one for 17). BUT I have always kept my boxes in the bathroom, right by the toilet. I use World’s Best Cat Litter and it clumps really well so even though it is expensive, it lasts a long time till you have to comlpletely clean it out. Because it is flushable it is easy to keep the boxes very clean as I clean it every time I go into the bathroom (ok, let’s be honest, everytime WE, the cats and I, go into the bathroom. We often are all going together and it’s a great way to keep an eye on their digestive health.
I have to confess here anecdotally: In real life, we have one large box in the bathroom and two small ones under the stairs. We scoop twice a day, and that has worked for us.
I know the “one for every cat, plus one” is the preferred formula often from vets and shelters, and that’s why I shared it. I know many people it works well for! I do think it really depends on the cats themselves sometimes too.
In Lupin’s case, he took 4-5 litter boxes to mean EVERYTHING WAS A LITTER BOX. It’s taken us a long time to retrain him, and it’s still a struggle sometimes. (…Keep that in mind for tomorrow’s strip, lol!) Go with what works for your home! And in real life, Tommy and Sophie actually do have beautiful cabinet boxes like the one in this week’s strip! I tried it and Elvis and Puck both seemed to really like it. Lupin sprayed down the walls like the box was on fire and he was responding to a call, lollll. It did not work for Lupin (and this was before Goldie). It would have been a great option for Elvis and Puck! It truly is all about options and what works for the cats in our homes.
I also must credit my editor Shena Wolf with the joke in this last strip. She said it once, during a talk around litter boxes, and I laughed so hard. The Man and I still say it to each other often, when scooping. I feel like many cat owners have had that feeling once or twice. It felt extra funny to give the line to Puck as an optimistic “ah, the future is bright” kind of moment, lol!
Sixty years ago today the world changed, but not just because I was born. A wall in Berlin was begun that would divide the world. I’m glad I got to live long enough to see it torn down.

I was going to mention the “one box per cat, plus one” earlier this week. When I volunteered at the humane society we would tell cat adopters this.

I have 2 cats, 2 boxes. Scooped twice daily, and when I suspect it need it.
No room for more, unless I get a cabinet style – and I doubt either would use that.

By Malvina Reynolds, sung by Pete Seeger: Little Boxes
Litter boxes on the first floor
Litter boxes made out of wood and plastic
Litter boxes on the first floor
Not necessarily the same
There’s a plastic one and a credenza
And a new one and an old fashioned one
And they’re made out of wood or plastic
Not necessarily the same.
…….
And the cats living on the first floor
All like to use different boxes
We know Elvis likes to use the old one
But the boxes aren’t all the same
And there’s Tommy and there’s Sophie
At their home are the credenzas
And they’re made out of wood or plastic
Not necessarily the same.
…….
And each cat has a preference
Of which box they want to use
In boxes made of wood or plastic
And remember to wash their paws
There’s a plastic one and a credenza
And a new one and an old fashioned one
And they’re made out of wood or plastic
Not necessarily the same.
