I remember visiting Howe Caverns as a kid (upstate NY caves). The guide gave us a hint how to remember which were the stalactites and which were the stalagmites. Just remember the stalactites are holding on TIGHT so they don’t fall. I forget now if there was a saying for the other ones…..but this is enough to tell the difference.

My teacher remarked that the M in stalagmite stood for mud, which is on the ground. And the T stood for top, up on the ceiling.

Common decency forbids me from telling how a tour guide told us how to remember the difference, many, many years ago, and it was a mixed tour group!

“… the rare and annoying stalagmate.”
So rare that there are only 17 of them in the entire world.
