Reminds me of an episode of I LOVE LUCY, where Lucy ordered escargots in a Parisian cafe, and—seeing that they were snails—asked for ketchup. The chef was ready to murder the waiter!
I’m surprisingly not grossed out, but I’ve read Patricia Polacco’s children’s book “Thunder Cake”. Tomatoes and chocolate cake go together better than most people realize, especially with cut strawberries on top. (But it’s better to mix tomato puree directly into the batter than to squirt ketchup on the side.)
In ‘94 my wife and I had a layover in Moscow. At the hotel restaurant we ordered steak and potatoes. We asked for ketchup. They’re was no such animal. We ordered two steak dinners for 6 rubles.

Why would a person who obviously known nothing of fine dining be willing to pay the price$ a place like this charges?
Oh, and where did she get the money to pay for a place like this?

This could one of my brothers-in-law. We gave him a case of ketchup for Christmas one year.

It could have been a real travesty, she could’ve used mustard.
