I have jumped out of planes, flown planes and hang gliders, and all sorts of fun things - but never anything I thought was outright dangerous, and never anything I didn’t want to do. If I’m not comfortable doing it and I don’t have to do it, I’m hanging by the fire because I DO like that.
cdward - That’s it. I used to do “risky” things back in the day, too. But it was always something that I figured I could handle, not just throwing myself off a danggum cliff.
It’s getting crowded, but cozy around the fire. I have a healthy snifter of Laphroaig and a good book and I’ll take that little space on the right hand side. Sorry to the person whose hand I stepped on.
When I was a young lad, I had a stuffed animal I would bring with me everywhere. It was “little foot” from the land before time. oh memories… and sign me up for that fire anyday over the snow.. we have tooooo much snow here.. blah
Do it and you will remember this day the rest of your life and it will always be glorious. Fail and you probably won’t be aware of those last few days in the hospital anyway.
I would like to apologize to all for a few weeks ago, when I hit Flag on some of the comments. I thought it meant that I agreed and Liked them, now I heard it means u r flagging them to report them, which ws NOT my intention. The ones I flagged, were the ones I liked. Please accept my apology. I certainly meant well, and will try to get with the program! :-D
When we were kids we took chances all the time. Never did we think of the consequences. I think we were more afraid of getting an a$$ whippin if you were late for dinner…lol
I’m glad you remembered that line of Falstaff’s from Henry IV, Part 1, mightaswellbe. There’s another Shakespearian line that also applies here: “The cowardly die many times before their deaths; the valiant never taste of death but once.”
A somewhat warped version of the Spirit of Adventure. But where would we be without the Irish monks who reached North America before the Vikings or Columbus, or those Vikings, or Columbus, or Magellan. Or Charles Lindbergh or Amelia Earhart or Yuri Gagarin or Alan Shepard. They had to pull up when they hit those rocks and hope they made it over the ravine. And they did. And here we are. Not everyone can do that, or even want to, but somebody has to. But we’ll let Calvin wait a while before he makes his mark. Or big splash.
Be sure to read my last posting yesterday, which clears up some major confusion.
It seems that the winner of the “I want to be the final GoComics poster of the day” contest got confused with the winner of the “Interpretation of Calvin’s backwards snow-writing for jet pilots” contest.
Understandable confusion, really. This sort of thing happens all the time.
Sissy weasel? It looks more like a cat of discretion.
But it takes 25 or so years for the human brain to develop enough to give us discretion.
Obviously, tigers develop it sooner.
However, if tigers are like the smaller cats, they develop a sense of vanity that makes them clearly suggest, “I meant to do just that,” or “You didn’t see that!” when they do try something that fails.
The first 2 interplanetary ships should be named Magellan & Cook, as a reminder that you don’t have to survive to be a renowned explorer. I’ll keep the fire going in case you get back. It’s chilly yonder.
I’m with Hobbes on this one. Give me a cozy, roaring fire … a nice hot cup of cocoa … a good book … and my best friend in the entire world and I’m in absolute heaven!!!!!
Aren’t you worried that, perhaps, 17 months from now, someone may add an additional comment to the end of the January 26th, 2011 postings?
By the way, if you look back at the earlier postings on the evening of the 26th, you will see that The Sojourner made the final posting before the strip of the 27th appeared online, and then JP Steve and I immediately awarded him the prize. So you will need to bribe The Sojourner, JP Steve, and me, if you want to share the title. :>)
It didn’t take 17 months. Sorry Mythreesons. And Yukoner said, about 18 hours ago
“The fire, a good book and a double scotch - that’s for me.”
I agree. Especially a good single malt. But at the moment I have a nice cold Mexican beer and it’s warm here in the tropics.
También, Buenas Noches a Fer Lefer en el DF.
Finally: I totally agree with Hobbes!
Hasta mañana a todos.
All I meant was when he did not paint a pretty picture ,he was showing the crash cite or the celebration cite .But real short on specifics on how he was getting there .
So I did at first and still do.take the fire side and rum and coke please.

Of course Hobbes, being really Calvin, means Calvin followed himself to the middle ground……
serenasakitty almost 14 years ago
My choice also. It doesn’t look like Hobbes had to twist his arm too hard to get him to take the sissy route.

If you made it, nobody would ever believe you and if you failed you could die before anyone found you, therefore the middle ground is the only choice

Sometimes you just have to go ahead and take the risk.
Not the risk of doing something really stupid that you will pay a big price for, but the risk of being called a sissy weasel by your friend.
Kids go through this all the time, and it’s very difficult because both choices involve risk. Peer pressure is no fun.
Fortunately, tigers and humans are not peers.
