For everyone who thinks Hobbes is 100% imaginary, as Watterson himself asked: how do you explain the strip where Calvin plays Houdini and Hobbes ties him to the chair in a way nobody could do it alone? Watterson refuses to give a direct answer, but that’s as close as he comes to saying Hobbes is more than just Calvin’s imagination.
It’s like I’ve heard for years – even a tame tiger will probably turn on you sooner or later. Look at Siegfried and Roy and that white tiger of theirs. Wow!
Schizophrenia or Multiple Personality Disorder. Aside from being Politically Correct, a nut is a nut is a nut. Explaining how Hobbes was able to pull off the scam without Calvin’s involvement sounds like the theologians explaining the discrepancies of the Bible: “You gotta have FAITH”. That being said; Let’s stop trying to find fault with something that’s designed to entertain us. Calvin is a fantastic little boy, living in a fantasy environment. Can you imagine how great it would have been to grow up like Calvin.
Sooooooo… his imaginary tiger cut it out and sent it to him? Unless the first story arc was a magic genie that brought his tiger to life only for his eyes, I think Calvin needs to get one of those special padded suites and the fancy jackets with the really long sleeves. :-s LOL!
I don’t know what you’re talking about! Hobbes is just as real to me as he is to Calvin . . . and all the voices in my head agree with me too!!!!! (Kidding, of course!)
As Xane_T said, Hobbes’ level of existence was never firmly established throughout the run of the comic. He was both as “real” and imaginary as the situation and the reader needed/wanted him to be. Part of the charm.
Maybe Calvin is just a six-year-old boy with a vivid imagination. Or better yet, maybe this is a comic strip and trying to diagnose a cartoon character is just a little bit silly.
Seems that all this psychobabble reveals OCD among the commentators. An obsessive compulsion to make logical sense of a comic strip character. bizaker just called that “a little bit silly.” I disagree. If you really do have OCD, it is sad. If you are just being pompous, it’s stupid. If you are just joking around, ha-ha.

This is one of those storylines where Calvin shows a profoundly worrying tendency to schizophrenia.. Love it. ;)

Not schizophrenic, but multiple personality syndrome, also a very serious psychiatric disorder. Thank goodness it’s only a cartoon.

Or, given that its a comic, maybe Hobbes really IS alive when nobody (except Calvin) is watching.
