Today’s Calvin and Hobbes strip is from 1990. This was one of Bill Watterson’s recurring themes:Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (August 8, 1986)Click here: Calvin and Hobbes (July 12, 1993)

65: we’re part of the group that will never be able to retire, so we read in bed ever night and call it Vacation Hour! It works.

Correction: Todays Calvin and Hobbes strip is from 1989, not 1990. The daily strips we have been reading this summer were from 1990, but today they switched to 1989. These are the strips that were rerun in 1994, during Bill Watterson’s second sabbatical.

Calvin, you know perfectly well that you have absolutely no intention of reading any novel.

I’ve been retired for 15 years. Yes, to me being at my old work desk sounds like fun. I’ve tried going back to work and just don’t have the strength to do a good job. I enjoy my life now, but I have to search for relevant things to do- volunteer etc. When I worked I was making a real contribution to society, even when I didn’t actually much feel like doing so. I miss that feeling of accomplishment, even when I am spending the day reading a good novel.

In addition to a few other things like volunteering, a good book works for me these days. At the present time, I am about half way through “Unbroken” by Laura Hillenbrand whose previous work was “Seabiscuit”..On average, I read one or two books a month…

While you have nothing but free time as a kid on summer vacation, your young age and lack of cash severely limits what you can do and where you can go without your parents. I liked earning money at a summer job and being more independent as I got older. I see lots of people with e-readers on the train going to and from work, and I suppose there’s also audio books if Calvin’s father drives. High school turned me off novels for good, but I’ve gotten through hundreds of hours of recorded TV and DVDs I’ve transferred onto my iPod Touch. This morning it was the Spewey And Me episode of Get A Life, presumably about as far away as you can get from the highbrow stuff Calvin’s father would appreciate.

It’s his attitude that gave the strip all of its charm.

As Dad walks out the door he remembers he’s not going to have to deal with whatever chaos and calamities Calvin will create over the coarse of an average day, and suddenly its the best day of his life.;-)

Retired since ‘07., now my job is to daily figure out a way to pass the time seeing and doing interesting things, like checking what Calvin’s up to now, and the comments he elicits!

Calvin and his pet tiger Hobbes like to stay home while surly dad goes to work. Calvin’s mom refuses to make breakfast and Hobbes looked at a magazine.

I just read this by Bill Watterson. It really helped me to understand where his head is at and what kind of amazing person he is:

Idea for a strip:Calvin’s Dad: I have the day off. Enjoy school Calvin. I am sure you will be fine with just sitting there while some unionized lazy teacher drones at you while I am outdoors.
