Thatâs what you get for giving him the Oxford English Dictionary for Christmas.

âIchthyoidâ?!? How DOES this kid come up with a vocabulary befitting a PhD? Small wonder Wormwood doesnât like him. Calvin no doubt puts her meager vocabulary to shame.

And this is just Calvinâs straight news story. Wait until you read his editorial section.
The fish in Momâs kitchen wasnât as lucky as Goldy in The Far Side:Click here: The Far SideTodayâs Calvin and Hobbes strip is from 1989. Stephan Pastis did a series on the tabloids in 2007 in Pearls Before Swine. Here are two strips from that series:Click here: Pearls Before Swine (July 2, 2007)Click here: Pearls Before Swine (July 9, 2007)Tah Tah about 10 years ago

I wish our local boys would try a few new adjectives from time to time; especially since they donât do much investigative reporting, it might help their usual story about the weather become more interesting.

Leadingedge, go easy on Liverlips. Always useful to have the low-information voters self-identify, even if we donât care what causes their (and theyâre) whining.

He picks up the trade fast.

This is one of my favorite Calvin strips. His use of obscure words and warped perspectives to sensationalize it is a hoot!

Yellow journalism at its finest!

Why is it that Mom and Dad never encourage his creativity?
DutchUncle about 10 years ago
I found the dictionary boring. Rogetâs Thesaurus, and even more Bartlettâs Familiar Quotations, on the other hand, were a never-ending source of âbon motsâ.
neverenoughgold about 10 years ago
Unless I am mistaken, Calvin and Hobbes was pretty much black and white when it originally ran; except of course, the Sunday editions. Today, there are many more ânewsâ sources and you can get your journalism âcoloredâ pretty much any way you chooseâŠ

And below the fold: âIntrepid reporter ejected from food establishment for exposing scandal!â
Karaboo2 about 10 years ago
Something fishy about that headline.

Prescient strip, given that 25 years later weâre seeing that sort of âjournalismâ daily from media outlets desperate to retain their declining number of readers/viewers. Itâs sort of like if CNN brought in Jerry Springer because more people are watching HIM than watching THEMâŠfor the same reason.

When I want news reporting this good, I watch Fox News.

Quite a vocabulary for a little kid!

For a kid who hates school, his vocabulary is amazing.

@Sham_Poser: Thatâs correct â the reruns of the reruns from the second sabbatical are ending. Sunday should be the beginning of the 1995 strips, since that year began on a Sunday. Right now we are living 25 years in the past, but soon it will be only 20!

Kids all hate fish. In my high school French class everyone noted the French word for fish: âpoisson,â and used it regularly.
