I agree with Hobbes. Now winning that kind of money is a different story. I’d quietly move somewhere where I’m notknown and definitely would not tell anyone. So if all of a sudden you don’t hear from me anymore, I hit the jack-box.
This is certainly dated … $20M for today’s celebrities would be considered a pittance. Didn’t Kim Kardashian lose almost this much in a robbery just in the jewelry she had with her while traveling?
Even today, few celebrities (maybe 100 in the U.S., mostly athletes, but counting actors, singers, authors, and FFBF [Famous for Being Famous]) make more than that in a year; they just live like they do. That’s why so many eventually end up in debt.
Even the Kardashians “only” make about twice that in a year, so $20M would represent several months’ “work” for her.
Not to mention the former “A-Listers” now doing commercials for used car dealers because either they didn’t save much when they were making a lot, or didn’t tone down their spending (enough) when the big money stopped coming in.
The percentage of celebrities over 40 who make at least 1/4 as much as when they were 28 is very small.
Imagine you’re the drummer in a band with 4 other guys. Everyone knows the band pulled in $100M this year. Your share, after taxes and touring expenses, is probably around $4M. It’s impossible to “live like a rock star” in Hollywood for that. So you have the choice of either living like a surgeon and being able to retire, or spending more than that and going into debt, or at least having to tour into your 70’s. And by the way, a lot of surgeons end up in debt, too: they want to live like rock stars.

My friend: “What would you even do with an elephant?”
Me: “I wouldn’t buy it, stupid. Just that it would be great to have that much money!”

If only they had made a Calvin and Hobbes TV series, then Hobbes could have been a TV star.
