I wish you could just go into school, pick up a book and learn things. Instead, it’s all about fitting into the group (or failing to). Some say that school serves the purpose of “socializing” kids. I just wish socialization wasn’t a “sink or swim” game!
I knew how to read when I started school, and was appalled to discover I had to stay for an entire twelve years! Oh, the horror! The indignity! I figured if I could read, I could get the rest of it on my own. And boy! Did I tell my parents all about it, too.
School, like almost everything in life, is what you make of it. I hated school. It was too easy for me and it was boring. I quickly realized the double standard that was in place; I could get away with a lot of stuff that would have had other students expelled. Why? Because I was college-bound. I never had to try with the exception of geometry and I got a ‘D’ in geometry my only mark not an ‘A’ . I got a rude awakening my first semester in college (where you had to actually work to learn) when I failed everything. Ironically, I became a public school teacher. Schools primarily exist to teach students to sit down, shut up and follow instructions, and if you are college-bound the directions become more complex. I resigned long before I intended to because of NCLB. I wanted to foster critical thinking and wasn’t allowed to. The last thing the powers-that-be want is a nation of critical thinkers. So, although I agree with much of what is posted above, Triker2011’s comment was/is heart-wrenching.
Schooling is a place for kids to socialise and learn the enviromment in a leisure way. Unfortunately the educationists think they have to teach the children to survive in the rat race.
Hobbes putting both of your legs into the same pants leg by mistake is relatively easy. Now what really takes being a genius and knowing how to use your smarts is being able to put both of your legs into one pants leg and then finishing putting on your pants by putting both legs into the other pants leg. Being able to zip the pants up after that and being able to buckle your belt earns extra points.

I don’t recall ever getting a lesson in first grade on putting on your pants one leg at a time.

school isn’t really gonna help with keeping kids from putting two legs in one pant leg. All it does is teach useless knowledge.
