Lets see in 1970 Mom probably had anywhere from 3 to 6 or 7 local TV stations depending on her hometown and if they had PBS and independent TV stations. By 1980 with cable she probably had 20 to 25 including CNN, TBS, C-Span, USA network and perhaps HBO. By 1990, she probably had more than 50 so by the late ’90s she would be overwhelmed by the number of channels if one got the full cable package with all the premium channels and regional sports channels and the original cable channels spawning off duplicate channels (ESPN 2/Classic, MTV2/VH1, HNN, etc). Nowadays, the average Gen Z kid would look at that TV guide and think that it is nothing (rather limited) compared to the content on just a website like YouTube, let alone the whole web……

We have roughly 140 active channels on our TV…and most of the time, I still need to go to Disney+ to find something to watch.

I agree! With 100s of channels on the satellite, I still have to go to Disney+. So I cancelled my cable, put up an antenna, and got everything I usually watch for a LOT less money!

I gave up on TV a long time ago. I do watch the reruns of ‘Murder She Wrote’ with my wife every weekday and even for that short time I have trouble watching some of the most stupid and boring commercials ever. Mind you there are some clever ones but seeing them one or two times every weekday does get old very quickly. Nope, anything I watch must not have commercial breaks – so DVD movies is what I do and only one or two movies a week. There are far more exciting things to do in life than simply watch something on TV – like read books. (Although some of the documentaries on Disney+ do sound like they are worth watching).

Please enjoy this beautiful Friday and have a fun weekend.

Like others have said, imagine if Cathy’s mom had to deal with the hundreds of channels we have today. Personally, I mostly only watch stuff on the major networks, but good to have the others just in case, I suppose.

HI, MOM. Happy Friday, “Cathy” Clan.

She’s right…the TV is worse…I can’t imagine what my parents would do if they were still alive. I couldn’t even get my Dad to leave a message on voicemail without making him irate.
