I had a boss who had Security find me while I was working at a Renaissance Faire.

“Who died?”

“Nobody died. What?”

“Why are you calling?”

“I can’t figure out how to turn on your computer.”

And he was the president of the company.

I have never, ever been reachable while on vacation. Any boss who suggested I should be I told that if I was that valuable to the company then they were not paying me enough. I used the same line when told I needed a cell phone so I could be reached while on the highway. Now I am part owner of a company – and I am still not available when on vacation. That is what vacations are for.

I have never subscribed to the 24/7 availability game. I used to have to take a beeper home when I worked in Children’s Protective Services…nearly smashed it to smithereens. One worker stood on his porch and threw it so far, they never found it.
