In some places, even today, the only water available. In others, they walk for literally miles and scoop it out of a hole in the ground into a dirty container.
I’ve tried to think wittily about this, but water scarcity is a VERY real tragedy. BTW: the latest New Yorker tells us that gonorrhea is now flourishing in our throats, and has increased by a factor of 7 since 1988. Rejoice…

Artesian well water with carbonation, salts, or high mineral content was always a better choice than cistern, lake or stream water.
