Arguing means both sides have a point of view but don’t want to hear the other’s side. Debate is when they have differing points of view and are forced by convention, to listen to each other.
I know so many people like this…their “conversations” are full of yelling and insults, and when you try to make peace they say, “Oh, we’re not arguing! We’re just talking!” I’d hate to see one of their “arguments” then.
A colleague and I were having a passionate discussion about a new policy. Boss walked by and commented thatnit wasn’t worth arguing about. Colleague looked up and said, “Oh, we weren’t arguing, we’re Jewish!”
