One of the true geniuses of the metamorphic background was George Herriman in Krazy Kat. A cloud could turn into a mesa which could turn into a lake which could turn into a huge tree palm growing from a tiny clay pot. He didn’t confine it to backgrounds, either; Krazy and Ignatz could be sitting at a table in the first panel, riding in a balloon the next, and tumbling down a waterfall in the third, all without a break in conversation.
