I remember an old song in the early 60’s about a boy who meets a girl at a dance and walked her home giving her his sweater to wear. Went back to get his sweater and the girls father told him he wasn’t with his daughter that she had died a year ago. This reminded me of that song.

The Chicago area tale of Resurrection Mary. A tale of a young lady who gets picked up near a dance hall and on the way to her home disappears near the Resurrection Cemetary.
“Phantom 309”, another song about a trucker who forever hitchhikes from the cross road where he lost his life to a diner where he gets off. As a thank you, he gives the trucker who picked him up the price of a cup of coffee saying “tell them it’s on old Joe”. The diner guys refuses the coin telling the singer to keep it as a memento. He then tells how “old Joe” lost his life years ago at the cross road where the singer picked him. That he’d crashed his truck rather than hit a bus load of kids that had crossed in front of him and how every so often a trucker will come in the diner for coffee having given old Joe a ride.

Phantom 309 is a ghost truck that occasionally picks up a hitchhiker at the cross road. The hitchhiker (the singer), hitchhiking cross country is stranded at the cross road on a cold rainy night. Cold and wet he’s thankful when a big semi stops to pick him up. Great lyric done in the narration style. Worth a listen.
