Cul de Sac by Richard Thompson for September 30, 2012
Transcript:
Alice: My name is Alice Otterloop, and I'm 4 years old. I live in Cul de Sac, a suburban community ringed by a mighty wall and girded by a moat of stagnant traffic. It's placid exterior hides mysteries to chill the blood! Alice: Yonder stand the haunted gazebo, where no one ever dares set foot. Yet, on midsummer's eve, it's suffused with a special light, and the murmured prayers of ghostly druid priests can be heard! Alice: Or the uncanny old lady, a throwback to a time before could de sac! From her kitsch filled yard she beckons, seeking to turn the unwary into small yappy dogs with her dire magic! Grandma: What'd she say? Alice: Alice! Stop being silly and come talk to your Grandma!

Cul de Sac is indeed a mysterious and wonderful place, and Alice is its preeminent spokesperson!

Apparently Big Shirley hasn’t arrived at Grandma’s place yet.

So that is where those “small yappy dogs” come from. The World’s Ugliest Dog must be a mutant reject!

“Girded by a moat of stagnant traffic.” Classic.
I haven’t been reading this strip for all that long, and I’m glad to go back and find out how it all began. I hope Richard Thompson can beat his health problems, though.

Hope for the cure, then. As a diagnosed Parkihson’s sufferer, it’s been hard to get my head around the fact that, right now, the only way this disease goes is down. All I can do is the best I can, and I give many, many kudos to those who have shown me that down is definitely not out. I may not be able to drive any more, but I definitely know that if you keep going, even if in tiny little steps, you get somewhere – and figuring out where “somewhere” is is an adventure in itself. Thanks, RIchard, for providing me with a bright beacon – not to the unknowable future, but to the bright present.

I mowed her yard when I was 12. I procrastinated til she called me 3 times, then I procrastinated and waited til the middle of the day to mow, when it was hottest, so that my thick glasses constantly slid down my nose. I cursed the kitsch as I mowed around it, drowned out safely by the mower, which also silecnced the yappy dog, who then appeared to be hopping up and down, senselessly flapping its jaws.Ahhhh, those were the days.

(bemused smile) I think I was a less vibrant Alice at one time!

Ha ha ha ha! I was smiling at the ‘traffic’, was enchanted by the gazebo, chuckled about the dogs, but ‘grandma’ made me laugh out loud. I said it yesterday. I love this strip. So glad to be able to see the begining. Sad for the reason they are running though. Prayers for all who are struck by malady.

Alice’s version of Cul de Sac looks like those medieval paintings of the Tower of Babel. Here’s Brueghel’s version : http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e1/Brueghel-tower-of-babel.jpg
