And to India and the Philipines. Recently, I received an email advising people who phone 800 number specialists and get connected to someone overseas, that we have a right to speak to someone in the US and by law we must be transferred to a US specialist. A few weeks ago I called the 800 number for Hotmail and someone with a barely understandable Indian accent answered.I requested to speak to someone in the US and he refused to connect me. I asked to speak to his supervisor who also refused even though I told him that by law it was my right to be connected to an info-specialist in the US, he refused. I hung up.

Although I don’t like to be connected to a rep with a thick accent, I realize that it’s part of the price we pay to have cheap consumables at WalMart, Costco, etc. And it’s cheaper for American multinationals to outsource customer service call centers overseas instead of setting them up in America. That’s capitalism.
