Doctor: The hip replacement went well, Mr. Redfern. Your wife should recover nicely. I do want to keep her here for a couple of days for post-op therapy. Rick: Good luck with that. She's obsessed with getting back to work... Joanie: Hullo? Did I call you? Where am I? Alex: Gram! Let the anesthesia wear off!

My name is Joanie and I’m a political junkie (Shouldn’t Jeff be at his mother bedside?).

Can we get Romney a hipness implant?

Who’s she calling? The Warren campaign? Jeff?

We lefties had better brace ourselves for 4 years of Willard’s War, maybe 8 — against Iran or Pakistan. Plus, he’ll keep us in Afghanistan, the graveyard of empires.
The American voting public will never learn, I fear.

“… self hater of their own Semitic blood …. ¶ po’ brownfellas … ¶ … free sex … VD cures. ¶ … world wide crime … stolen elections.”
Such Nazi racist rant against Jews and all non-whites (non-Aryans) based on fear of losing elections is what powers voter suppression.
Come on and scream out what you really really want: “Ein volk! Ein reich! Ein führer! Adolf Hitler! Sieg heil!”

It’s not the voter’s poor choices necessarily – look at Ohio in 2004 or Florida in 2000 for example. Instead of (or in addition to):
“Those who own the gold make the rules” we have “Those who make the voting machines own the election!”montessoriteacher about 12 years ago
Hip replacement patients generally go to a physical rehab center for physical rehab after a few days to recover in the hospital. Joanie is really pushing it, big time.

Jeff doesn’t do reality. so don’t expect him to be “there”. lol
Beleck3 about 12 years ago
hey, Mitt will “win”. His son and friends own the machines and the software the Ohio vote will be “counted” from.
what better way to be sure to demand payback by his son from the horrible treatment at the debates. owning the machines and the software to “count” the votes is a win, win, win for Rmoney.
if Rmoney doesn’t “win” like Bush did in ‘04 in Ohio, i’ll be pretty surprised.
America today is like no other Empire in History. we can rewrite the past and make reality fit our dreams. lol.

Was there any strips regarding a bad hip?

Joanie is Trudeau’s gentle spoof on A-type over-achievers. While we can laugh at her desire not to be tied down by a mere hip replacement, nevertheless, I think it is a cautionary tale for all of us to slow down, take a deep breath, proceed a bit more cautiously in our lives. Those commentators who rush rashly into irrational rants, would be well advised to stop, breath deeply, think hard and long, and reply judiciously, and politely,
montessoriteacher about 12 years ago
I rarely hear of anyone in Canada or England or many other places complaining about their health care. I guess I would rather wait a few months to get elective surgery done for free or a rather nominal amount, rather than have to take on a major medical debt. Medical debt can be enormous. Even if they have higher taxes, it all comes out in the wash. Sooner or later, we will all need medical care, which is something we learn as we get a little older. Lots of folks asked my husband what he thought about government subsidizing more in terms of health care and he said that he thought it was inevitable, sooner or later. Costs keep rising, yet people will always continue to need health care. The Romney plan ?— seems to involve the status quo of going to the ER for those who don’t have insurance, which is an added cost for everyone.
montessoriteacher about 12 years ago
Too bad Joanie can’t talk to Arianna Huffington, who was recently quoted after hip surgery. She said she was enjoying the last debate a lot more after taking pain killers for her recent hip replacement.
IQTech61 about 12 years ago
Okay – how on earth did Joanie end up wit a broken hip?
montessoriteacher about 12 years ago
I don’t think she had a hip fracture, since that would have been mentioned. She needed a hip replacement due to age and wear and tear thereof.

“It can take up to a day or more for the full effects of the anesthesia to wear off fully.”So true, Nighty – after my detached-retina surgery, the nurses were concerned because I was answering their questions in monosyllables instead of loquacious paragraphs. They asked my daughter, “Is she always like this?” Sheesh. I can recall my daughter holding up a prescription and asking me, “How can we pay for this?” I managed to mumble, “Credit card.” Didn’t feel like elaborating (as I am now).
DylanThomas3.14159 about 12 years ago
I think Trudeau must be putting Joanie through this trauma to satirize the inadequacies of the US health-care insurance system, especially when compared to that of other countries.

“On this lib site, any subject o.k. except Benghazi and the Romney surge.”
Since you just brought up both subjects, you have just contradicted yourself, haven’t you?
Do you have any points to make about either Benghazi or Romney’s surge? Or both? I, for one, would be happy to engage you, as long as you don’t start to troll off. In that case you’ll be flagged and ignored.

“Wonder how many of those Mormon kids come back from their mission in body bags?”>>While there are no actual public statistics There are quite a few of the missionaries who are at least verbally abused. However, from anecdotal evidence there are truly horror stories. There have been many of the sister missionaries thathavebeen raped, some killed, right here in the USA. Some of the Eldershave also been physically assaulted. Elsewhere,in the thirdworld, there have been multiple problems. Also, in industrialized nations.>>Just Sayin’

Voter IDs are required only under certain circumstances in Illinois. From the Chicago Board of Election website:
There are several situations when voters need to show identification before voting. Usually, ID is required to prove the voter’s identity and residency at the address of the registration. Here are the most common situations:
1 Any time a voter uses Early Voting, the voter must present a government-issued photo ID such as a current Illinois driver’s license, a current state identification card issued by the Illinois Secretary of State or a current passport. This is a requirement under Illinois law.
2 New voters who register by mail who have not previously supplied the Election Board with appropriate ID need to show sufficient ID the first time they vote.
Special Note: If you registered on or near the deadline and if your name does not show up on the precinct poll sheet at your polling place, be sure to ask the judges to check the “supplemental” poll list.3 A majority of the judges of election at a polling place challenge the voter, based on a mismatch of the signature or other discrepancy in the voter registration, or if the voter does not appear on the voter rolls. Again, voters who registered very recently should ask the judges of election to check the “supplemental” poll list.
Please note that even if you don’t have ID, you may cast a “provisional” ballot.
Please also note that if you are in the wrong precinct on Election Day, your provisional ballot will not count under any circumstances. On Election Day, a provisional ballot must be cast in the precinct where the voter is registered to vote in order for that ballot to be added to the count.
If a provisional ballot is cast in the correct precinct, voters have two days after the election to deliver documentation and/or ID to show that their registrations were valid in that precinct so that their provisional ballots may be counted. That proof must be delivered to or presented at the Chicago Election Board offices at 69 W. Washington St., Chicago, on the Sixth Floor.
What forms of identification can a voter use to prove identity and residency?
A voter needs two forms of ID, at least one of which must show the address of the registration. These may include:
- A valid and current Illinois driver’s license- A valid and current state ID issued by the Illinois Secretary ofState- A copy of a current and valid photo ID- A current utility bill with name and address- A current bank statement with name and address- A recent government check with name and address- A recent paycheck with name and address- A recent government document that shows the name and address— A current college ID card
Note: During Early Voting, voters must provide a current and valid government-issued PHOTO ID, such as a current Illinois driver’s license, current state identification card issued by the Illinois Secretary of State or a current passport. This is an Early Voting requirement under Illinois law.
montessoriteacher about 12 years ago
The requirements regarding voting vary a great deal from state to state and many of these changes are quite recent, so I hope that not too many fall through the cracks, as many fear. Some are thinking there may be somewhat of a backlash against the voter suppression movement, as there has been some push back in regard to this mess.

“… jet contrails of world leaders flying to the States for medical care ….”
Yep, there goes one now, overhead, spewing twin jet contrails from the private jet of a billionaire slave-labor master of one of the poorest countries in Africa. He’s coming to see a world-class dentist to get his teeth whitened.
Too much crystal meth, doncha know.
