When Agnes is a 22 year-old performance artist living in an old school bus with no running water, and Trout says she heard Bob’s software company was just awarded a government contract worth millions..
she’ll be searching her 2nd-hand, 5-year-old laptop for the “unspurn” key.
Anyhow…. I don’t see Agnes as spurning everybody….yet.
At this age, she still desperately wants to be popular and admired, even though if she became such, I think she’d soon feel stifled.
She’s got nothing to worry about on that last score though cos no one except Trout talks to her.
And in spite of Ms. Newman’s usual dour take on their relationship, the two of them have a very tight bond. They’re merely at an age when ALL emotions are embarrassing…. Did you never, in pre-adolescence, hate it if your mother hugged you, or say you’d NEVER love your sister….So their friendship, too, is expressed in sarcasm and digs.
Agnes doesn’t hate Bob. She’s embarrassed cos he likes her;in some complicated way, she’s also convinced he must be a pariah, cos nobody socially acceptable could like her….
And she derives her only source of social power by spurning the ONE person she thinks might be “beneath” her…(Mostly because he’s willing to like her. )
Inside, she’s a bit proud of his attention…and maybe even attracted….which she’s too young to handle.
…. that and that Bob will for now, not give up on Agnes. While at 22 she’s looking for the unspurn key, he’s across the street, sipping an Uber type café, hoping for a glimpse of his true love.
