Jason: As his eyes adjust to the darkness, your wizard finds that he has just walked into...the cavern of a thousand cavern demons!!! Marcus: Eek! Jason: Roll for initiative. Marcus: Wait, that's not 1,000 cavern demons. Jason: They'll be attacking in small waves. Marcus: But that takes away their numerical advantage! The monster manual says they have above-average intelligence! They should be attacking me all at once! Jason: These miniatures are expensive. Three was all I could afford. Marcus: I'm just telling you, it's unrealistic. Jason: Fine. Your wizard has walked into the first of 333 1/3 caverns Marcus: Much better. Thank you.

The Cavern of 999 Demons sounds more reasonable to me.

Well, at least he’s not using army men with yellow stickies on them like my DM

All you really need is three miniatures. A boy’s imagination does the rest.

True, but Marcus ain’t goin’ for dat! It’s to his advantage to go for the literal whittling down of his opponent, and Jason is going along with it.

But he doesn’t have 6.93128 figurines. (333 to the 1/3 power)

those figurines are uber expensive. that is why video games especially skyrim make playing rpgs more cost effective and more fun.

Imagine the horror of walking into the cavern of 99 Bottles of Beer on the Wall.

Hey, my GM would use Skittles or M&M’s when we were up against vast numbers… then he’d eat them as they died!

What’s the younger generation coming to? Back in my day we were REAL D&Ders; we played with dice, graph paper, & imagination. Grumble, grumble…..

I bet he’s glad they’re not playing Warhammer 40K…

Marcus is a purist. When Jason substituted a creature from another game for as moster he didn’t own, Marcus had himn ride his bike three miles in the rain to the nearest toy shop.

Marcus is such a purist. It’s funny and annoying

You know, I’m kinda surprised that there hasn’t been a strip about Disney buying out Star Wars yet
Doctor11 almost 12 years ago
Sheesh, you don’t have to be so picky, Marcus.

‘The Cavern of 1,000 Demons’ would be a great name for a rock band.

They also made a version of D&D for sports fans. It’s called Fantasy Football.

I’d just say “you are attacked by what looks like enchanted gummi bears” and dump a bag on the table….
Let the player(s) figure out what the heck had transformed into the gummi bears.

And this is why we use loose change for the monsters and spare dice for party-affiliated NPCs, and only use miniatures for the player characters. The bigger the coin, the more powerful the monster. Wait, is that a… Oh, No! Not a Kennedy Half-Dollar!

Ugh miniatures like that are so expensive I ounce saw a 300 dollar dragon
