A new 200 wt bulb just buirned out, so if I misspell it is lack of visual ….. OK, clutching her purse in fists. Now is she going to throw the purse at her or keep it safe. a very determined look on her face. Blessed Be..
Endtowners need to stick together. Holly knows this. Even if she doesn’t like Linda right now, she realizes that the little koala might eventually become a valuable addition to society. Plus, Holly doesn’t like backing down from a challenge.
Wanted to state something about the problem of helping people who aren’t asking for help, but decided it was better put “below the fold,” so it’d only be disturbing to us long-term fans. (Besides, I was on my Nook Color.)#You may have seen something in the media this last week, about this shoeless man on the streets of New York City, and this cop who intervened and went and bought a pair of boots for the shoeless man. Well and good, you might think.#You might also have seen something about the shoeless man turning up back on the streets over the weekend, barefoot again, with a story about hiding them away for fear of being robbed of them. (I’m dubious about the story, but this isn’t the place for that, unless something more comes up from others here.)#You can see the danger of helping someone—-they might go along for a time, but, in the end, they might reject it. Linda could accept Holly’s help—-Linda obviously needs help—-but, in the end, it could all unravel, simply because Linda isn’t asking.
I don’t think she got in through the door for that split second, but instead I like to think she just chewed a hole in the wall and walked in instead. Because it would be funny. She’d still be pretty darn fast to do that too.
As I know all too well, often the people who don’t want help truly are the ones who need it the most. And you need someone to whack you over the nose with a rolled-up newspaper from time to time to keep you from doing stupid things. Holly looks more than ready to do some smacking. . .
Revenge is a dish served best by a mouse waitress.Linda thinks three months of Endtown reintergration is tough wait till Holly starts. This is not Basic training. This is Advanced Ranger Training.
@RobertNowall I haven’t voiced my views on the interwebs about the homeless guy situation because all people want to see is an act of charity and not the overall situation. Kudos to the officer trying to do a good deed but here’s the thing: this guy is living on the mean streets. He’s not at a halfway house or in any situation where his overall situation will get better. What does that mean? It means those brand spanking new shoes will either become targets for his less scrupulous fellow homeless or they could become quick cash to buy him something to eat or whatever else he might purchase. The kind act was a good one but since the person overall situation is not changed, the shoes will either become a source of anguish (fight to keep them secure) or a commodity (sell to get money to buy something else). Whether he really wants the help or not and whether he needs the help or not are matters independent of each other. Wants are one thing, needs are another.
I’m going to ponder how a homeless person can best be helped. It isn’t an easy thing. Maybe a cheap type od shoe that wouldn’t bring much if sold. Or one that won’t be coveted by others. Maybe just a nice lunch or trip to a grocery to buy him some vitamins or a few pieces of fruit. This does require some serious pondering. Most homeless are mentally ill too.
Please don’t stop Aaron from continuing this story arc! This is how we get character and back story info. This is extremely informative, ANDVERYINTERESTING!!! Some of us really want to see the character exposition, and hope to glean MANY interesting—-but up to now, unknown facts about the Endtowners, and the Topsiders. Aaron needs to tell the story HIS way. We have been patiently waiting…let him continue, please.
The “homeless man”, Jeffrey Hillman, isn’t really homeless. He has an apartment in the Bronx and receives disability and veterans’ benefits. I’m disappointed in the amount of time it took to find that out, though. It seemed the media focused only on the officer and the photographer, and forgot all about the person who (I thought at the time) needed attention the most. The jury is still out whether he’s back on the street shoeless because he’s mentally ill, or a faker, but in either case, he didn’t really need the officer’s help.We do know that Linda does need attention. She’s not faking. She may spurn it like Hillman, but she can’t afford to do it like he can. Helping Hillman does no good, but helping Linda does no wrong.
Right Noreen! And lets not be over picky on details. Its a conic strip. Okay, holly gets in rhe room super fast. How? Who cares!!. All these little unexplainable things….“its in the script” thats what my dad used to say….
“I don’t think she got in through the door for that split second, but instead I like to think she just chewed a hole in the wall and walked in instead. Because it would be funny. She’d still be pretty darn fast to do that too.”Oh, yeah, like Holly would want to have that stereotype propagated. Not only would the other waitresses at the cafe never let her live that down, Maude would charge for the repairs to have the hole replastered. Then, not only would she have a bad taste in her mouth while helping Linda, she’d have drywall caught in her teeth. And yeah, I think chewing a 2’-diameter hole through solid wood would probably take a little longer than the time to slip through a pre-existing gap in the doorway. Be faster to just run around outside and come in through the window.

The hardest thing about helping people is getting them to the point where they will admit that they need help.
