Surfstuff,Basically it would be a poor mans version of biscuits and gravy except over toast. I don’t know how thick it would be from the jar and heated up. I would keep the salt, pepper and tabasco sauce handy. And something else to serve with it, just in case.Good luck. :-)

i remembering eating this back when i was a kid. my mom served it on toast (the “shingle”) and, actually, it wasn’t too bad. it was filling, nourishing and cheap.

@stuff55. S#$t on a shingle. Internet should give you a few receipes. The “shingle” is toast. Actually, it’s pretty tasty. Don’t be afraid to spice it up a little.

Creamed chip beef makes a decent breakfast. Had it many times for supper growing up in the 60’s ( Dad was AF).Usually served over toasted bread (the shingle part).

Its easy to make.Fry some hamburger, and season it to your liking.Make some white sauce (milk gravy).Add the hamburger to the sauce/gravy and simmer for a couple of minutes.Serve over toast.

As for Creamed Chipped Beef, I loved it growing up. We were pretty poor, and any breakfast that didn’t consist of plain oatmeal was a real treat. It took me a long time to appreciate oatmeal again! But I haven’t had Sh** on a Shingle in quite awhile..

I always heard that all veterans hated creamed chipped beef on toast…

Creamed chipped beef on toast was called something else when I was in the Navy, not very much nicer that SOS. The SOS was ground beef in white gravy. I remember the SOS was usually served when there was a Marine detachment on board, or on deployment. Actually, there were times on deployment when it was served in a tomato sauce over toast. I think the mess crew did with what they had.

We had that when I was in. Usually for breakfast. White gravy, sometimes brown with thinly sliced very salty beef on a slice of toast. The brown gravy I think gave it the S name. I liked it. It was better than cold C rations out of a can in the rain and mud of Viet Nam. I know other veterans would feel the same way. A good hot meal was worth its weight in gold to a service man. That is why I like the Chef. At least he is trying to make it pleasant. Oh I cant wait for the Graveyard shift work. That is what my wife worked. I personally loved working it as an officer. You would be really surprised what runs around your neighborhood at night.

Merry Christmas to all Endtowners including the guy who makes this all possible, Aaron Neathery. This strip has rekindled my interest in comics, although I will NEVER under any circumstance read “Love Is”…there are limits.

Back in ’52 I tried heating a can of C ration sausages on a jeep exhaust manifold. Ended up eating cold sausages.

Hard times. Once we were deployed on a mission in Sardinia. After a week of C rats, someone was wise enough to case out a nearby Italian Army encampment. We sorta invited ourselves to their mess. They served hot food, usually pasta with wine for all their meals. Needless to say, we did not use the C rats again. On another deployment, we were just a couple of miles from a Canadian mission. We wangled an invite for the evening meal. It was heaven compared to what we were used to. The Navy usually eats pretty well, until they send you to some god awful corner of the earth. Then you need to scout out the territory for some other outfit that’s better supplied. This was 50 years ago. I don’t pretend to know how things are now. I’m sure they are much better.

Some good thinking on the night shift. But that would be the time a bad guy comes in to rob the cash register. Then Linda could save the day and feel good about being an End Towner!

Aaron really needs a Christmas present this year. Give him one by bidding on this gorgeous original sketch, or by a print.

Strafford Farm Restaurant Dover/Somersworth N.H. has creamed chipped beef and biscuits on the breakfast menu. It is worth the drive if you are in the area.

I “LOVE” chipped beef. But , make it, don’t but it in a jar. All it is is sliced dried beef (comes in a jar) and cream gravy. Good on toast or biscuits. Be careful tho, dried beef can be “very” salty.

I’m familiar with Creamed Chipped Beef, being retired Navy myself, but all the services’ chow halls serve it. Properly made with dried salted beef (available in glass jars in the shops) , it’s rather tasty. The beef is very salty and should be rinsed first; then it’s sautéed and ultimately served in a standard homemade white sauce like any other “creamed” dish)(, over slices of toast. It’s a good breakfast or midrats (la very ate supper for shiftworkers, like Linda) on cold days, and it’s relatively quick and easy to fix. Be warned that some “Creamed Chipped Beef” is actually creamed mince – imagine ground beef, unseasoned, in that same sauce – and creamed mince on toast looks exactly like that unofficial(!) military nickname.

Level Head, as always, thanks for your holiday observation and wishes.SOS – it was the kind of thing one appreciated when you had it (a hot, or at least warm, meal during a cold deployment) and the kind of thing you despised when you talked about it. Couldn’t have been too bad, I still get biscuits and gravy for breakfast quite often at my local diner. If you don’t want it over toast, spreading over scrambled eggs works nicely – although it looks even less appetizing.Happy Whateveryouwishtocelebrate to all!!!
