Magellan’s mission was to get around the world, and Calvin’s mission is to get around Mrs. Wormwood.

The stark drawing style of this particular strip always stood out to me.

The savage natives Magellan encountered on his world-wide discovery mission could only be repelled by smoke grenades launched from Magellan’s Apache attack helicopter. Afterward, to explore their islands, he needed to wear a gas mask….simple, really.

Calvin’s teacher really dropped the ball on teaching Calvin about Magellan, considering his interest in exploring space (i.e. Spaceman Spiff), which admittedly IS an excuse to crash, but still…

They teach that in first grade?

Animaniacs Ballad of Magellan

Isn’t this kind of material a little bit above the learning levels of a 6 year old? Yes, Calvin is a very intelligent child but let’s face it: he’s more likely to be the exception in his class rather than the rule . . . unfortunately.

When the stuff he prayed for didn’t show up, Calvin wrote:Ma was gellin. My mom wearing her slippers with the jelly inserts walked to the kitchen and baked me some cookies. Now THAT’s significant.

This is why they’ll never eliminate prayer in school.

rmacprivate: The First Amendment “free exercise” clause gives one the right to pray in school. The same source “establishment of religion” clause denies the government any power to force you to participate in their mandated religion. Keep the difference in mind and stop promoting religious bigotry. Forced religion is atheism.
