Miss Bliss: Today we're going to try an exciting new art form! Beni: Miss Bliss, my sister wears a uniform to school. Can we wear uniforms, too? Miss Bliss: No. It's called origami! Please take a sheet of paper. Alice: If we get uniforms, will they come with hats, too? Miss Bliss: No. Now fold along with me as we make an origami duck! Alice: If we get uniforms and hats, would we be issued weapons, too? Miss Bliss: No. Fold this here, this over here- Miss Bliss: And, voila! A duck! Beni: This cootie-catcher is lethal at a distance of 20 feet! Kevin: Every time she tries something new, this happens. Beni: And I got a paper cut.

If by “individuality” you mean spending an inordinate amount of time and money obsessing about your outfit. Consuming fashion isn’t true creativity.

Poor Miss Bliss. I bet she had delusions of teaching sweet, innocent young things before she opened the academy….

I used to think that, but two thoughts based on experience. One: there’s no way to remove individuality, period. Uniforms may remove one avenue, but people always find their own paths. If anything, it inspires creativity – you know, necessity being the mother of invention. Two, in some places, the emphasis placed on extravagant clothing makes it hard for kids from poorer families to be taken seriously. You don’t erase class differences with a uniform, but you do remove the most visual reminder.

Paper cuts are the worst! Ever get one licking an envelope? OUCH!

So many people discussing the merits of school uniform have been distracted by the goals of the students, much like the way our attention is purposely distracted from everything, everywhere, in 21st century America.

They want you to wear uniforms, but there is always the place that sells a similar looking set cheaper. Then the ones with official uniforms look down and bully those with the cheaper ones.Catholic school was a horrible experiance in the 60s.
