Hurricane Hattie O'Hara: Is that a new watch you're wearin'? Wilberforce: Grammy gave me this watch for Christmas - it used to belong to my grandpa! Hurricane Hattie O'Hara: That's cool! Tell me what time it is. Wilberforce: I can't. Hurricane Hattie O'Hara: Why not - is it broken? Wilberforce: No, it's moving - but it doesn't show what the time is... Wilberforce: It doesn't have any numbers - just these two arms that keep goin' around in a circle, pointing at twelve dots!

Not far from the truth, I’m afraid to say.Think about this the next time you’re flying, and ATC tells the pilots they have traffic at 12 o’clock. As they both look at their digital watches and wonder “What the hell is he talking about?”

In 2005, a 13-year-old in my family, upon seeing a rotary-dial desk telephone, asked what it was. After the explanation, he thought it was cool, and used it in his room, until a few years later when his family stopped using the land line.

It is tough being a digital kid.

Yeah, and they don’t even teach them proper buggy whip technique any more. It’s so sad…

The kids are taught that everything that is wrong with the world is America’s fault.

As a 15 year old writing this, trust me, there are a few kids in my generation who aren’t completely dumb. We shake our heads at them too.

Not only can’t children today read an analog clock. They can’t add, multiply, subtract or divide etc… without a calculator! Sad situation!
merrymac3 almost 12 years ago
Yea, but the digital clocks makes them learn math. You can look at an analog clock, see the big hand on the 8 and little hand on the 4 and know it is 20 minutes til 5. When a digital clock reads 4:40, you have to subtract to know it is 20 minutes until 5:00. See some good comes from everything.

At least that old watch has 12 dots. Some of the modern ones are even more minimalist when it comes to lack of dial marks.

and PS- We have regular clocks in our house and so we have practiced at home which all parents should do.

Not learning cursive writing? That’ll be a problem later on when they go to take their SATs, as there’s a required entry that must be written in cursive writing, not in block printing.
