Beautiful cartoon: is that what wearing fishnets will get you from the sea?On the Blog: Moxie, still available and weird tasting as ever….That’s the way I would picture Nabakov as a boy aesthete. He and Saul Steinberg knew each other. I wonder if Steinberg drew the cartoon butterflies around his head? Besides being a great novelist, Nabokov contributed to the science of butterflies. Is Ceila looking for attention or just contemplating her prominences?
Frogophiles would like the description of the near-sighted Pnin swimming and his head coming up like a frog’s. Only thing I remember from that very funny novel. Easier on the mind than those poor skinned buggers posted yesterday!
“Have you got any sarsaparilla in your store?” asked Stuart. “I’ve got a ruinous thirst.”“Certainly,” said the storekeeper. “Gallons of it. Sarsaparilla, root beer, birch beer, ginger ale, Moxie, lemon soda, Coca Cola, Pepsi Cola, Dipsi Cola, Pipsi Cola, Popsi Cola, and raspberry cream tonic. Anything you want.”
Moxie is an interesting drink – my wife, being a Mainiac, introduced me to it in real life, although I had known of it from the Stuart Little passage since I was around eight or so. Kind of like root beer, kind of like sasparilla, but not really like either of them.
I love the early 20th century songs with their rendition of Hawaiian – “yakka hula hickey dula” is common. Hawaiian has only a few consonants, and “ka” occurs frequently because it’s the equivalent of “the” – and so the Americans put a lot of k sounds in their fake Hawaiian.
After staring at today’s comic for a sufficiently long time, I eventually noticed the trigonometric art making up part of the background. That lead to me thinking it should be called “Art Trigo” and I did an image search for that. Mostly I found art by people named Trigo and very little of what I was hoping for. But I did find a picture of Art Aragon vs Mario Trigo:I love the strange voyages this place sends my mind on.
No sea life need be inferred from today’s fishy cartoon. But what has possessed Teresa to cut off the lower left leg of her fishnets?! That’s the real question, my curious friends….

Wow! I can’t remember any previous appearances by Mutt and Jeff on the Blog. And animated, no less. But … what on earth is that they’re singing??

I’ve touched stingrays, but never dolphins. I prefer touching beavers.

There are several versions of Yaaka Dula Hickey Doola on YouTube; the Bing Crosby recording has better sound quality than most:

Is FA now a dolphin-friendly comic? I think it depends on how the dolphins were touched – not too friendly I hope.
