Amazed by the story, the doctor said, “You must be one whale of an outdoors man!”
“No,” the guy replied, “I’m just a really, really bad golfer”.
This was an old Johnny Hart strip that was recycled, and they may have ran it because Mason wanted to take a day off, but it wasn’t a strike by the players; it was a lockout by the owners, and it had been resolved 3 weeks earlier. An original strip would have been better showing a fenced-off frozen pond with a locked gate and having the whole cast standing outside staring at it.
