Margueritem and Nab, my condolences. In defense of marijuana usage I must say those are extreme statistical anomalies. And Nab, your comment is simply nonsense.
The vehemently anti-smoking people are the same sanctimonious pr-cks who turn a blind eye to the detrimental effects of smoking marijuana. I don’t touch either but I’m not a jerk about it. I’m a jerk about other things.
My brother was a diver in a water show with Buster Crabbe. It was called the Water Follies. I’m pretty sure he did some smoking commercials. He was an Olympic athlete. In the ads he said that smoking doesn’t affect his endurance.
About John’s strip today, I don’t particularly care for the captions but I really appreciate the dialog it’s generating regarding the use of marijuana. BTW Caldonia, pot is not addicting. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it.
Oh, I’m only speaking from personal experience. I quit pot myself when I realized was not managing my use of it. I’d consider that addiction. YMMV and all that.
Caldonia, “YMMV” meaning “Your Mileage May Vary” meaning that the opinion of the poster may not be shared by everyone else. I had to Google that. Thanks. Learned something new today.
Just for the record, I’m not a marijuana user myself. But I did vote to legalize it here in Washington State. It passed. But it’ll take a year (or more) to set up how it’s going to be handled and sold. (Distribution and sales are supposed to be carefully licensed.)
It’ll be a huge social experiment.
My feeling is that most of the people who are going to use it are already using it. So I’d rather decriminalize it and have the state getting tax revenue—-which should be considerable.
And, from what I’ve read, it’s far less dangerous than tobacco or booze. But, I’ll admit, this isn’t something I’ve studied. So, we’ll see…
I am absolutely convinced that the reason the crime rates have dropped here is because we have semi-legallized medical pot here, all the crim’s here now are too stoned to go out and do crimes, and even if they do get out to do some either forget why they were going out, or get the munchies and decide to buy some Cheetos.
Interesting. Of all the gags I’ve written, this has produced the most reaction here. Hmm. I’ll have to figure out what can top this. Maybe if I come up with a comic that features sex, drugs AND cats…
“Reefer Madness” was created in 1936, and its limited popularity, and message, MAY have led to the Marihuana (sic) Tax Act of 1937. By the Fifties, both the film or the act were hardly known, until Tim Leary had the latter nullified by the Supreme Court in 1969. The film was re-released a couple of years later by a pro-pot group, primarily as a self-satire.

Okay, it’s official. My Couple-Up caption contest is running here AND on Facebook. There will be separate winners for each site.
If you like, you can enter both here and on Facebook. But you can’t win on both sites. Just one.
All the FB contest rules and prize info apply to the GoComics version, except the following:
There may not be any runners up in the GoComics version of the contest.
I may post the winner of the GoComics version a few days later than the Facebook winner.
So, post away here or on the Facebook contest site. And have fun!
