That’s why retail invented “vanity sizes”. I always thought I was a 10….and then one day my mother in law said I could have some of her old dresses (retro, from the 40s) for costumes. All size 10. Guess what? They didn’t fit. AT ALL. Not even CLOSE. Manufacturers know that Americans have become larger people and have sized clothing accordingly. And the best is when you actually can buy something one or two sizes SMALLER than you usually do, because they use vanity sizing. Sadly, the bathing suit industry has yet to catch on.
If the customer will not change their mind it us up the the vendor to change the product. Or at least relabel it. We won’t eat sugar, but we eat sucrose and fructose all day long. This, of course, leads to more size 14 issues.

If I were in charge, clothing sizes would be standardised.
