Cathy: Where have you been?? Dinner's been ready for two hours! Irving: I'm so sorry! You won't believe it!! I passed this shoe store I've never been in and there was this wall of sandals that were so cute and they were all on sale! Cathy: Really? Where?? Irving: Wait... there was this one pair just like those seafoam green ones I have except these have an extra little strap with teal stitching and the buckles are more of a bronze-y gold... Cathy: Did you get them?!? Irving: I couldn't! It was like this magical shoe day where every pair was perfect, and I couldn't decide... but I knew you were waiting... and my cell was dead... and the sale ends today... and... and... Cathy: Oh, honey! Go back! Dinner can wait! Take all the time you want!! Irving: ... or, I stopped for a few beers after golf. Cathy: What?? You did what?? Irving: Funny how much better she understands me when I speak her language...

Wow, best lie I have heard in years. You see, he does understand. He just dosen’t care. But he cares enough to fake not understanding.

Loved the lie!

I hate to admit it, but Irving using Cathy’s own “language” against her that she completely fell for — hook, line, and sinker — was a pretty ingenious idea. And to think he would have had it completely made where she was concerned if only he had just stopped right there and gone no farther because chances were fairly good that she never would have been any the wiser regarding that incredible (made-up) sandal sale he told her about.
But I’m really glad he came clean and told her the truth. His two-hour-late-for-dinner inconsiderateness (not to mention the lie he told to cover it up) may have put him in the doghouse but he absolutely did the right thing. No matter how big or small it is, no good can possibly come from lying to your spouse ….. unless, of course, your long-term goal is an (eventual) ugly and expensive divorce rather than a long and happy marriage!

Ha—a sneaky trick by Irving. Speaking Cathy’s language worked wonders at first, until the truth came out. Still, he ought to file this technique on the back burner. Y’know, in case anyone he knows needs to use it … This one made me laugh.
HI, MOM. Happy Sunday, “Cathy” Clan.

Please tell me this strip is not based on the cartoonist’s real life. I don’t believe I could bear the sadness.
