LOL This hasn’t aged so well. My single friends tell me EVERYBODY meets online or via a service these days, and nobody’s the least bit embarrassed about it.
One easier/safer(?) way to meet someone is through meetup; it’s a site for people who have common interests (ex. movies, hiking, books, etc) to get together casually and enjoy things together or learn about new things they haven’t tried yet
A chance encounter at a student square dance (of all places!) is how my husband and I first met a little over 34 years ago. I was taking beginner lessons at one club, while he was taking beginner lessons at a different one. Periodically throughout the 6 months or so that it took to go through lessons, the various clubs would get together somewhere (usually in a church hall) for a two-hour-long dance consisting only of the square dance “calls” that we had learned up to that point. He and I kept running into each other at the student dances, then at the regular dances around town after we “graduated” and talked whenever we saw each other, but that was it. We were both in serious relationships with other people at the time so we just became good friends. But once those other relationships ended, we started going out (naturally our first date was to a square dance!) and we’ve been together ever since! ♥

My wife and I have never been ashamed of admitting where we met and usually joke about it. We met in a neighbourhood bar. Not the kind of bar were one would go to pick up or get picked up but one where you go for a quiet drink. I was there with my friend and she was there with her friend. My friend knew her friend so went over to talk to her. Not wanting to sit by myself when there were two attractive girls over there, I joined them. Three years later we were married and that was 45 years ago. My younger daughter met her husband through mutual friends and my older daughter met her fiancée in an online group. I don’t think there is any wrong place to meet someone so there is no need to be ashamed of that place either.
Another fine winter Thursday. Please enjoy it.

Most of the time, it doesn’t matter as much how you found that special someone, as long as you did find him/her. In my opinion, anyway.
On the other hand, if you’re happier on your own, more power to ya.
HI, MOM. Hello, “Cathy” Clan.
