They don’t look Filipino or Indian so either their jobs are yet to be outsourced or there has been a full turnaround in call centres.

Anyone who thinks that Sal and Melvin represent all men has had some bad experiences.

I know call centers are aggravating. Be nice. You get better results by being nice than you do when you yell. If you can’t understand the person, disconnect the call and try again.

If you had people yelling at you all day, you’d probably be less likely to be helpful when people are rude. And people can be incredibly rude.

The Chinese make the machine, a Korean writes the manual, a Mexican translates it into English, Spanish and French and an Indian gives you advice because you cannot understand the instructions. Hard not to yell a little every once in a while.

The rest of the world may think that America is getting its comeuppance for its boastful ways. Suddenly we’re not afforded the illusion that we’re in control of everything and everyone and we don’t like it.

Most call centers if you ask for a native English speaker, they have to connect you with one.

I was shocked to find out that my mom’s medic alert company outsourced to India. One morning i got a phone call at 5 am, “Mr. John, your mother’s alarm is going off can you please go check here,” the voice had a strong accent. So I asked, “why are you calling me and not the emergency response people and where the heck are you from?” They said, “we don’t want to have them break down the door if they don’t need to,” Which made sense in a way. Then they said “New Delhi.”

Bottom line: companies ship all the jobs to wherever they can pay the absolute least, so that the CEO’s can be rich, rich, rich. That people here are out of work is inconsequential in this. If a million people must starve so that ten can have more money than all their ancestors for the next three centuries could ever spend- so be it.

Hubby called about a problem with his computer. He’s got his programs in E drive but the person kept insisting he check out C drive (sticking to the script and afraid to deviate from it). No wonder hubby had so little hair when he got off the phone. My girlfriend hangs up when she hears a foreign accent that she can’t understand.

Yes, in that case she was fine. She did die a year later but it was her time. And yes it did need a land line.

My wife works at a call center in USA for a major satellite TV provider, and I can tell you from experience, both hers and other agents she talks to, being rude, no matter how exasperated you get, is not the answer. One person she told me about lost out on getting a valid fee waived because of his attitude. If he was decent, not even saying nice, but just a decent human being, he would have saved himself $85.00. If you must be rude, be prepared to pay the price.
