If they were not being forced to prepay 75 years of pension off in under 10 they would be profitable and not need to cut services or lay people off. Congress screwed them over big time.
And if Congress would stop skimming all their ‘profits’ off the top, the USPS wouldn’t always be running at a loss.Like the Social Security Trust Fund, those crooks in the Capitol decided “Oh, the Gummint cain’t make a profit, we gotta give that back to the ‘peepul;’ let’s find somewhere else we can spend it!”And thus, SSA is broke, the Post Office is broke – and thanks to a bunch of left- and right-wing fanatics who REFUSE to compromise on ANYTHING to get their JOBS done, the Federal Government’s Executive Branch is in the process of Shutting Down. But we’ll still be paying taxes, won’t we?
Hmmm… all these snarky comments because Roy is addicted to his personal electronic devices and does everything online. I thought the strip was funny. Poor Roy.
as much as I use my computer for e-mail and facebook and such, I still enjoy getting a real live handwritten letter from someone. I have a few relatives that don’t have computers and still write and it is a real treat to get a letter. I wish I had saved all the letters that my mom sent me when I was first married and lived 4000 miles away from her. Back then there were no computers and phone calls were very expensive (1968). I think doing away with Saturday delivery will be ok, I mean that is usually the junk mail day anyway.
My grandmother worked at the post office. It was in a small town and she would be the only one working on Saturdays. She would let us in the back to play with the rubber stamps. We had to be quiet when people came in. Very much against federal regulations. Always fun, always on Saturdays.
@bpullin The USPS does not use taxpayer money, they where self supported, till the Federal government started sucking money from their profits. Than things never recovered.
I’d just as soon it go away altogether; currently many online purchases still ship that way as default. I usually try to have totals that qualify for shipping, but I like it to MY DOOR. My box is the other end of a block and around the corner – too far to walk unless weather is perfect and too close to take out the car just for that, so I pick it up once or twice a week on my way elsewhere.
Privatizing is this glorious conservative fantasy about honest businessmen spurring the economy by remembering that capitalism is based on competition, and that competition means offering the best for less- to ATTRACT CUSTOMERS. Somehow it doesn’t work out that way. Business execs prefer the ’we’ve got you where we want you, and we’ll charge whatever we like cause you need us’ approach. Y’know…greed.

Hate to see Roy’s mailbox, probably has 3 year old bills and mail in it. Invites, credit offers and late payments on cards he never opened,
